We just launched GreenJobsNow.com, a collaborative project for Green For All, 1Sky, and Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection. Green Jobs Now is supporting a grassroots/netroots national day of action (9/27/08) to promote a conservation-based “green economy.”

You can sign up to host an event, or search for events in your area.

Technically, the site uses Plone, wrapped around Radical Designs’ “Revent” service for distributed event organizing.  It’s a nice example of simple integration between two excellent systems to achieve a powerful online engagement experience.

Thanks for the post, Sam. Now is the time to lift people out of poverty while simultaneously reversing global warming! Keep up the good work.

I attended an organizing session for the upcoming DC Green Jobs Day of Action coming on 9/27. One of the folks at the meeting spoke about what is the value of, what they considered to be nebulous, a green job for the average person standing on the corner. This person simply wants a job. In DC, a mostly white collar town, green jobs is somewhat “airy-fairy”, where talk of sustainability, environmental health, its good for the Earth, is still fairly abstract. Our efforts to green this economy and offer pathways out of poverty sometimes fall short in inspiring the average person form taking action. I can see the value and the vision and so do many of my colleagues and fellow travelers, but that’s preaching to the choir. Any thoughts on how to make the prospects of green jobs more palpable to others, such that they’d want to take action, would be welcomed.
